If you haven’t seen it yet, have a listen to the new real-time physical modelling plate reverb developed by Michele Ducceschi and Craig Webb through Physical Audio. This is a modal design, allowing for complete control over driver/pickup locations, as well as a detailed loss profile.

Oct. 13-14, 2016: NESS goes to IRCAM

The NESS team, including Stefan Bilbao, Michele Ducceschi, Reg Harrison, Craig Webb, Charlotte Desvages, Brian Hamilton, James Perry, Alan Gray, Paul Graham and Kostas Kavoussanakis gave a complete round-up of all activities in the project, from algorithm design and musical instrument acoustics to implementation in parallel hardware and real-time applications. On top of this, three of our composer collaborators, Gordon Delap from NUI Maynooth, Trevor Wishart, and Gadi Sassoon also came along to play four complete pieces produced using NESS synthesis tools. A great time was had in Paris at IRCAM. This was a joint event, co-organised by IRCAM and the Lutherie/Acoustique/Musique team at Universite de Paris Marie Curie.

Sept. 5-13, 2016: NESS goes to Argentina for ICA2016

Charlotte, Reg, Stefan, Michele and Brian were on hand to present papers at the International Congress on Acoustics 2016 in Buenos Aires, as well as the International Symposium on Musical and Room Acoustics in La Plata. Not a trip for vegetarians…pretty amazing, though. Most of us stayed in the San Telmo district, near the conference venue for ICA at Puerto Madero. Getting to and from La Plata was not obvious at times…our old friend and NESS collaborator Fabian Esqueda had to use all the tricks in his book to get us a taxi.

July 22, 2016: ERC Proof of Concept Grant: project WRAM

Great news today…we’ve gotten follow-on funding from the European Research Council for precommercialisation activities related to the wave-based room acoustics rendering work under NESS, led by Brian Hamilton, who will be staying on with us until 2018! The new project is called Wave-based Room Acoustics Modeling, or WRAM for short! Here’s a little news item from the University of Edinburgh with a bit more detail…

June 1-6, 2016: IX Symposium in Montreal

Stefan and Brian were invited to the IX symposium, in order to give a workshop, and play a new demonstration piece “Black Dog,” composed in 32 channels by Gordon Delap using the net1 environment. The SAT dome was mind-blowing.

March/April, 2016: Gordon Delap returns to Edinburgh

Our long-time collaborator Gordon Delap is back in Edinburgh to work with the brand new net1 code to do a 32 channel piece (OK, our studio only has sixteen speakers, but he’s going to do this anyway).
